Dane Drewis
Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles
I know Dane through Edd Naud. Edd is based in LA and runs fancy bike tours for a company called Duvine. Years ago he asked me to do a history talk about rum running in the Pacific Northwest on a San Juan Island trip. He’d been keeping tabs on tinyboatsession and told me he had a friend named Dane Drewis who would be great. Danes had been performing since he was a kid when he was asked to impersonate Elvis at, of all things, a taekwondo performance. Since then he’s been mixing and matching genres into something catchy all its own.
It was good to be back on the West Coast and put Clarabelle’s hull back in the salty Pacific. I met Dane on a dock in Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey. I loved Dane’s energy the moment he stepped on the boat. Easy going yet refined. Each place I’ve been to has a vibe, and LA sure has one. Was it the dark glasses on an overcast day? Maybe. The timing worked out so that Edd could come, and he brought Oliver and Simon, some of the other guys whom I’d met through the bike tours, and his neighbor, Witt, for good measure. It was the first time tinyboatsession had been standing room only. He brought a six-pack (or two) and we floated in shallow water under an overcast sky and traded stories in between Dane’s serenades to a full boat. Instagram: @danedrewis
