David Dean

Rio Grande, Albuquerque, New Mexico

I know David Dean through Mohit.  I love watching and the instrument changes the person.  Tinyboatsessions happen out in the world.  Some musicians dress up, some don’t.   When I meet someone dressed up I think, oh yeah, here’s the musicians.  However, with most folks on tinyboatsession, it’s the instrument they carry that identifies them.  I find a bit of magic in this.

Without his guitar, David could have been sitting next to me at a bar, or in line for a movie, or in line at a grocery store.   Unless we struck up a conversation I’d never know, nor think to ask about his talent without his instrument.  With his guitar, he was transformed.  Something more than the combination of the instrument and the human.  The preface to his second song struck a nerve.  He didn’t have a name for it.  He just said it was a song he wrote to make happiness out of anger and anxiety.  What a gift one can make for themselves and communicate to others.

Since I was in Albuquerque on the same part of the river for a while it was a good place to invite folks to come and see tinyboatsession in person.   Mike and Andra with his kids, my parents, their dog, and Andra’s mom.

Part of what I have liked about tinyboatsession is that there is something guerilla about them.  The musician and I show up with our respective tools.  They make something beautiful.   I capture the moment.  Every once in a while someone sees it.  It’s fun to be artsy and surreptitious, but having a few people gave it a feeling of community, and that felt good too.
