I know DeCoy through Rudra. She came out with Rudra for Season 3 in her beautiful handmade traditional Apache dress. I was moved that both of them would come out for tinyboatsession in the rain. Out of it came this delightful image of Rudra, dressed sharply in tweed with his dreadlocks, holding an umbrella over DeCoy in her beautiful dress while the rain tumbled down.
When DeCoy performed for season 7 she wore her dress again and brought a large red shawl. The designs and words support the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women’s movement organized in the USA & Canada. Its goal is to bring awareness to the disproportionally higher rates of violence indigenous women suffer. It is often depicted as a blood-red hand, usually across the mouth representing the silence that many of these cases suffer from that leaves them vulnerable.
DeCoy’s performance for Season 7 was a wonderfully blustery moody day… but at least it was dry. She is Chiricahua Apache from Fort Still. She's a performance artist in many mediums and also a traditional bead worker. DeCoy wears and lives her culture and she brings it to all that she does. She learned a lot of her traditional songs from Leeland Michael Darrow, who is the tribal historian for the Fort Still Apache. She brought a drum and sang it to her own tempo while the wind tossed the feathers in her hair. IG: @decoygallerina
SEASON 3 INTRO: I know DeCoy through Rudradeep, whom I know through Champagne, whom I met through my rowing tour in Seattle. Rudra and I exchanged some texts and managed to nail down a time. He also said he had a friend, DeCoy, who could come. The weather decided to add a bit more complexity. It was raining with more to come. I told him that it would be ok if they wanted to cancel. He said both of them were up for it.
Rudra showed up with DeCoy. DeCoy is Apache. She came in in a beautiful hand-made traditional dress updated with some goth embellishments. I admired anyone who would wear a dress in the rain, especially to sing a tinyboatsession. Rudra held the umbrella over her while she played her song and sang what was in her heart, in a tinyboat, while the rain came down. -Jordan & Clarabelle
