Emily Ritz - Lumpland

Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles

I know Emily Ritz (Lumpland) through Carlie Armstrong.  Carlie used to work for Airbnb managing the Airbnb experiences in Seattle.  I have an experience with my rowboat, Clarabelle.  It’s a 3-hour tour called ‘Rowing Urban Waterways.’  It’s not much of a stretch to say that Tinyboatsession is an offshoot of this tour.  In addition to rowing the ocean and the Mississippi twice, I also hosted 300+ rows.  I even got an award from Carlie.  She changed jobs and moved to LA.   When I knew I was heading to Tinseltown I reached out to see if she knew someone who wanted to sing a song in a tinyboat.

Carlie knew not one, but two Emily’s that wanted to sing a song in a tinyboat. The timing worked out that they came out in the boat at the same time.  Having an extra person in Clarabelle the tiny boat is wonderful, it means they get to see how special this is in person, and somehow that makes it seem a bit more real–which is also good because If I told someone I filmed someone playing music in a boat in front of a boat named boat, they might think i'd been drinking the bilge water.

That morning the water was busy with all kinds of paddles, seals, and sea lions, and even a man driving a sailboat while playing a horn.  It was tinyboatsession meets medium boat session, but as Emily said, all boats are tiny at sea.

Emily's other work spans ceramics, and a range of media, including tattoos and hyper-detailed textural drawings and paintings that draw inspiration from textiles, tide pools, and her experience in her body and life in it.  Instagram: @lumpland
