Justin Nunez
Rio Grande Oxbow, Albuquerque, New Mexico
I know Justin Nunez through Season 3 of Tinyboatsessions. I think he’d heard about the project from Felix Peralta after I had left Albuquerque in the spring of 2021. I told him that if I came back I’d reach out again, though at the time I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep up the project. I was thrilled to have a reason to reach back out to him. His enthusiasm hadn’t wavered, and he was still keen to sing a song in a tinyboat.
At the time of filming, there were huge fires in northern New Mexico caused by a prolonged drought. Although in Albuquerque it was mostly clear blue skies the sadness of the destruction was on everyone's mind.
Justin sang songs about rain and clouds. It resonated with me. Not just because I hoped rain would come soon to quench the fires in New Mexico, but because I love rain and clouds. I’d grown up in New Mexico and as an adult sought out the Pacific Northwest. There I realized that rain and clouds felt more like home to me than the sunshine. Though Justin was singing about the need for the monsoons that would hopefully come soon, his line ‘A visit from a raincloud is like a visit from a friend,’ made me think of Seattle, and how the rain felt like home. By the time his session had ended a few small clouds had moved in, and they were reflected in the calm brown water of the Rio Grande. Instagram: @justinnunezmusic
