Kim & Alec
I'd had the idea of putting songs in tinyboats for about a week. It felt odd asking for people to come play music in a tinyboat as the world was changing so fast. I had one tinyboatsession, but thus far no one had come back to me with a yes. At 11:30 on a Friday, two days before the stay-at-home order in Seattle, Kim, a rower introduced to me by my old buddy Paddy at Pocock Rowing Center called me. She brought her friend Alec and we played on a sunny day in spring. With all the Season 1 tinyboatsessions I asked them for some thoughts at this moment. Find more Kim at:
“I am a violinist who has performed with the Pacific Northwest Ballet for 30 years. I teach at the Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences (SAAS), and is the director of the Puget Sound Chamber Music Workshop at the Music Center of the Northwest which promotes local community music. Alec is a bluegrass musician who plays mandolin throughout the Northwest. By day, he works as a service carpenter for JAS Design Build. He holds degrees in choral conducting and music education from the University of Idaho and Central Washington University.
All of our performances, rehearsals, and jam sessions have been canceled. Many of the arts organizations we work for are in dire financial jeopardy. Music depends on a close community. Without it, we‘re feeling isolated. Music needs 3 things to complete the circuit: Composer, Performer, Audience. Tinyboatssession is a great opportunity to reach a new kind of audience. Thanks for helping close the circuit Clarabelle (the name of Jordan’s rowboat)!” -Kim, March 2020.
