Koko Barrios
Fort Proctor, Louisiana
I know Koko through Phoebe. Phoebe was one of my first tinyboatsession connections in New Orleans and when we planned on coming out to Fort Proctor I asked if she had any friends that could come. Koko does many mediums of art and music is just one. I loved her outfit; sequin sparkles, neon hat, and hiking boots. It screamed, “I am outside on a tiny human-powered boat and also will be performing a concert.” It made sense that her outfit told a story, costume and design are one of Koko’s artistic disciplines.
Fort Proctor is outside the flood wall of Plaquemines Parish. These are literal walls with literal gates, strong enough to maybe hold the sea back for a bit. Beyond this is a place called Bayou Yscloskey and Shell Beach. We followed shell roads parallel to bayous full of shrimp boats, cypresses, and palmettos. It was windy and a mile-long pull out to Lake Borgne where we used the Fort as a windbreak and tied the stern of the boat to the rocks so I could film and keep the fort in the background.
After a morning of song, the wind picked up enough that I felt the safest option was to have them walk along the rip rap connecting the fort to the barrier islands and pick them up on the other side. Maybe I was right, maybe I was wrong. The image of Phoebe in a red dress and Koko in sequins walking with instruments along the rip rap along a barrier island in the middle of nowhere was like a scene in an Italian comedy. @roseonheart
