Lara Manzanares
Rio Grande Oxbow, Albuquerque, New Mexico
I know Lara Manzaneres through Justin Nunez. Lara showed up in a cowboy hat and a jean jacket and looked every bit the part of a bilingual country western artist. This was going to be the last tinyboatsession of the day and neither of us had to be done quickly. It was overcast and the combination of those factors meant the lighting was perfect and easy to work with.
In these moments of setting up the canoe shot I found out that Lara not only sings and writes in two languages, but has woven textiles since her childhood in northern New Mexico where she grew up. She also lived and went to school in San Francisco where she was also a census taker.
The diversity of experiences of some of the folks I meet blows me away. I feel so lucky to have stumbled upon an idea that meets up with a love of water that folks like Lara want to be a part of. As we spoke she mentioned briefly she was concerned about wasting my time. I told her that nothing could be further from my mind. I was so glad she had come and wanted her to have as good a time as I was. I hoped this was the case. The tinyboatsession was this moment. The footage after it’s all done was merely the souvenir.
A fish jumped. Lara smiled and she began to sing. Instagram: @laramanzanares
