I know Mikey Muffins because they were one of the few folks that reach out to me on social media and asked to do a tinyboatsession. It feels good when the energy of reaching comes in the other direction. It’s applause to a musician, laughter to a comedian, a book review to an author.
Most of my artistic endeavors involve a lot of solitude, so when someone reaches out, says they like tinyboatsession, and want to be a part of it that feels good. We had to dance around the heavy fall winds and rain and their tour, but everything lined up on a perfect November morning in Tacoma by Point Defiance. Mikey told me they sang sad songs and hoped that was ok.
The sun's low in the sky in November and that seems to give a sharp quality to the light and lots of shadows to play with. Mikey’s first song made me cry and the background of a large ship and much larger Mount Tahoma/ Rainer was about as Pacific Northwest as it gets. We changed the location to the Tacoma Narrows. Clarabelle rocked in the tumultuous waters of the confluence and Mikey played through it all. The waves stayed out of the boat. On the way back, we saw dozens of seals, a half dozen sea lions, a hungry eagle giving a salmon a ride into a tree to be devoured, and of course, seagulls.
We said goodbye, and Mikey headed to Ellensburg. I listened to their songs while I put the boat up. As I re-listened to the second song, I realized the wave had me working so hard to control the boat and the camera that it felt like I was hearing it for the first time. -Jordan & Clarabelle
