Roselyn Lionheart & David Leonard

City Park, New Orleans

I met Roselyn and David because they are Arlee's parents.  She was the woman I met sweeping piles of leaves on my way to a backyard concert fundraiser for a lost canoe to meet Phoebe.  Arlee’s been singing all her life, and her parents have been singing music since before then… since 1959 when they met in an Air Force ensemble band.  They have been playing music and busking in New Orleans for 40-plus years.  One might say they are fixtures, but the term legendary seems to fit a bit more comfortably.

They brought a lot of instruments to play with so instead of the usually floating tinyboatsession we did one along one of the bayous in City Park.  Clarabelle the rowboat still wanted to be a part of it so she leaned in close to get a good listen, but don't worry, we got a good row in after.

Seeing two people play who love each other and have been playing for over 60 years together is well… it was extraordinary. I felt it when I first filmed it, and when I look at it again I’m just as moved.  That combination of things is rare and special.  When I took them for a row David said he’d never seen this side of New Orleans in the 40 years he’d lived there.   That made me happy that he felt he got a good trade out of some songs, cause I sure felt like I got a great deal.
