Sequoia Rose

Humboldt Bay, Eureka California

I know Sequoia Rose through Turtle.   Turtle had been one of the first folks Stella introduced me to and he’d provided the boat and scouted the location on the Mad River for Season 3.  The two of them were standing on the dock under the bridge across Humboldt Bay when I returned with Noah.  They made a great pair.  Turtle, a large man with a Cowboy hat, duster, and boots, and Sequoita, slender, long hair pulled into a loose bun with torn jeans—kind of like a Wild West country music version of Gandalf and Legolas.

One of the delights of tinyboatsession is meeting folks whose music I’ve never heard until they step in the boat.  I have no idea what they are going to sing.  They showed up to sing a song in a tinyboat, and that’s the song I want to hear.   Rock? Country? Folk? Flamenco?

Sequoia is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist.  They’ve been in a band since they were 14 and have been teaching since 16.  Bluegrass, gospel, country.  After cutting their teeth at churches, revivals, and local festivals it wasn’t long before they were performing all over and year-round.

We rowed out across the bay and found some quiet little rivulets that had formed in the mudflats on Daby Island across the bay.  Tide was low but rising and had yet to cover the neon green seaweed that covered the mud.  Sequoia flattered me and tinyboatsession when they said they were nervous.  I told them not to worry.  It's just a song in a tinyboat.
