Dellow
Berkeley Marina, Bay Area, California
I know Dellow (Danny Roholt) through Dennis Mill. Dennis was from Season 3 in Sausalito. We met at Berkeley Marina. It was windy and cloudy, but Dellow was up for an adventure and we rowed past the seawall into two-foot white caps. Across the bay, San Francisco was shrouded in fog. Not the bridge, not even the top of a skyscraper was visible.
I am always honored that these musicians are willing to trust me with their instruments in the boat. It means a lot to me. We rowed up into the wind to get enough space between us and the seawall. When I felt we had enough space for the length of the song I turned us around and let the waves push us back in while Dellow rocked up and down and played two songs that resonated with me in that specific moment. The first was ‘If I share my Crazy with You,’ about honoring the crazy in each other. Since I had spent the last two months dragging a boat around the country asking people if they wanted to sing a song in a tinyboat, and was getting a little road weary. Each of these tinyboatsessions has been a meeting of creativity. I want to hear the song from the person that says they have one to sing on a tinyboat. To me, that sounds like honoring the crazy.
The second song seemed like a follow-up to the first. “Hold on to the light” is about defying that moment that haunts every artist. The self-doubt that haunts all creative activity. It's a feeling that’s seductive in a hateful way and I think just about every artist feels it at least once. Dellow sang an antidote to that. A lot of art doesn't have a destination or a purpose until after it's created and that process takes a little faith, or holding on to the light. Facebook: @danny.roholt
