Los Domingueros
Rio Grande, Albuquerque, New Mexico
I know Josue Urrutia and Shana Urritua of Los Domingueros from Justin Nunez. They call themselves Albuquerque’s premier and only menudo-based band. For those of you outside the southwest this is a traditional Mexican soup that revolves around the main ingredient of beef tripe with hominy, and chili. It’s a celebration dish, and one people either love or hate. I grew up with my dad and a few uncles very into it, but though I've tried it many times…well… I'll just say i’ll keep trying.
What could a menudo-based band mean? I think one way to interpret it as something uniquely New Mexican. For a landlocked city in one of the smallest states population-wise, Albuquerque is a crossroads. For 400 years Indigenous, Spanish, and Anglo cultures have simmered here. For the last hundred even more varieties of peoples and cultures have settled here creating something unique marination of cultures. Josue described his band as using Latin music to get people into Ska. Mixing genres seems to be something built into the landscape of this place.
Jose and Shanna were a lot of fun. We spent all the takes in between laughing. I loved seeing a husband and wife work as a team work together. It seemed like they were lucky that they had something like this to share between them, and it was even cooler to see it in two languages. Instagram: @losdominguerosband
