Lowmellow
Rio Grande, Albuquerque, New Mexico
I know Lowmello through Justin Nunez. He’s a California transplant out here in New Mexico. I feel like I can hear a bit of that California beach in a bit of his psychedelic Indi-rock. As someone who left New Mexico to find a place that fits them best, it's cool to see how Lowmello has found himself out here in New Mexico.
For all the tinyboatsessions I have folks do an introduction. Name, band, body of water, and the name of the song. This doesn’t seem like a lot, but if one has a bunch of songs in their head it can be a bit distracting. Lowmello said he wasn’t good at introductions and I told him not to worry, it was a tinyboatsession. The next thing that popped out of my mouth was ‘Everyone looks beautiful, but no one looks cool.’ He looked off to the side and then repeated it with a pondering look that maybe gave him some misgivings about making his way out to the water.
What I hoped to communicate was the magic I saw in his and in all these tinyboatsessions. Before I post a song I go back and look at what I filmed several times and l’m always struck by the peace and presence I see in this amalgamation of musician, boat, and waterway. Everyone does look extra beautiful to me, and while I think this project is awesome, the diminutive nature of the tinyboat seems to draw out a bit of whimsical purity. In the back of a tinyboat, there is no room for pretense. Of course, they were cool, but no one wore it as a mask. To me I see the artist doing art for its own sake.
I think Lowmello got what I meant (I hope!), and went on to sing some great songs. I wonder where New Mexico will take his art next. Instagram: @lowmello
