Nick Josephs

Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles, California

I know Nick through Erinn Williams. They came out to sing some songs on their own and mixed their genres for a groovy, genre-bending duet.

Nick is a musician, actor, and filmmaker.   It was fun and fascinating to hear how he had made a life in LA through different mediums of performance.

Marina del Rey was popping with watercraft, notably a flyby by a tour boat, Mariachis, curious sea lions, and enough of a breeze and wakes that added a lot of dynamism to the stage.  Clarabelle is a sturdy boat, she was nowhere close to concerned, but she demanded more attention which made her hard to row with my left hand while I filmed with the other hand.

In the parade of boats, we found a scrap of water that was mostly out of the way, a new background (I’d had several sessions in Marina Del Rey) there was a Mariachi band playing.  It sounded loud in the boat, but the microphones picked up just the faintest hint and Nick's songs overpowered it when he began to play and even seemed to complement what he was doing.  One of his songs was about a wooden ship that the crew burned to keep warm.  As he finished, a large purple 1980s superyacht,  one of the most tasteless things I've ever seen floating, and the antithesis of a wooden boat, floated past.  I couldn’t have designed a better juxtaposition, and that is one more reason why I love tinyboatsession.
