Erinn K. Williams

Marina Del Rey, Los Angeles

I know Erinn through Joel.  Joel is the only tinyboatsession who did one in the water, without a boat for Season 3.  It made a bit more sense when I found out he was a long-distance swimmer… and an actor and performer. He wasn't in town for season six, but he introduced me to Erinn Williams and Nick Josephs. They came out to sing some songs on their own and mixed their genres for a groovy, genre-bending duet.

Erinn is an opera singer, actress, and producer.   It was fun and fascinating to hear how She had made a life in LA through different mediums of performance.

Marina del Rey was popping with watercraft.  Notably a flyby by a tour boat and a garish purple yacht.  Mariachis playing on the shore, curious sea lions, and enough of a breeze and wakes that added dynamism to the stage. Clarabelle is a sturdy boat, she was nowhere close to being concerned, but she demanded more attention which made her all the harder to row with my left hand while I filmed with the right.

The power of an opera voice was something I'd never experienced in tinyboatsession.  Sound design is something I've just been learning by doing along the way.   Usually, it's pretty straightforward to balance, but I had to ask Erinn to sing away from the mics on some of her high notes.  On one of her songs, a tour boat drove past with an engine vibrating so hard I could feel it.  Erinn adapted, strumming the guitar for a brief interlude. I could hardly hear her for a moment. I expected the mics to pick up nothing but the drone, but in the video, it's just a soft rumble. I like that Tinyboatsessions are out in the world.  Somedays it is peaceful and quiet, other days a flurry of commotion, kind of like the rest of life. Instagram: @erinnkwilliams
