Sarah Bassingthwaighte

I met Sarah through Kim. It was cold around midday, and When I met Sarah in the marsh by the boat. It was crisp. All the musicians so far had been toting a guitar. The flute was in a small case. I knew that a flute came in several parts but had never actually observed the process of putting it together. She clutched it tightly and told me the flute needed to be warmed up before it played. Sarah played and soon shed a layer. I became more aware of how physically demanding the process of making music is. It's hard for that to translate through a speaker, but obvious in a tinyboat. It might be obvious, but It should be said that flutes, forests, and boats blend beautifully. She would later introduce me to her son, Izzy, who would play for Season 2. I asked all of season 1 for some words to mark the time in March of 2020. You can find out more about Dr. Sarah Bassingthwaighte and her composition, playing, and teaching at her website:

“I'm a Flutist, Composer, teacher (teach privately and at SPU). I am a musician that loves to try out new things, travel, play music, and do all of those things with my awesome son, Izzy. I've known a couple of people (at this point) that got Covid-19 - one of them went to the hospital for a few days, and the other died. All of my performances have been canceled, but I am healthy and grateful for friends and family and the music community. I'm thinking up creative projects to do with other people! We're connecting in ways that we would never have thought of." -Sarah, March 2020.
