Julio Perdido & Marina Gagarina

Season 3, Mad River/ Season 7, Humboldt Bay, Eureka California

I know Julio through Fig.  They had both played in Season 3. Julio was not on my radar to play that spring afternoon but came with their guitar and said they had a song and asked tentatively if there was room.  I told him I’d film as long as I had light and power, and I had an extra battery.  Unexpected additions like Julio made that day by the Mad River so special.

Julio brought Marina for Season 7.  Each of them played in each other’s bands and each of them brought a song for each other to play back up on.  Julio has a band called Los Perdidos, and Marina’s is ‘Think Tank Everywhere.’

As Turtle and I returned from his session we could hear some jamming from the pier gliding across the water.  The day was waning and Julio and Marina had become pressed for time but was just enough to get them into the boat and play a few songs tied up to the dock.  It was my first shot with the bridge and the light was heading towards golden hour.

I know Julio Perdido because they came with Fig. In the world of social media, I had an idea of what folks looked like, and when Fig showed up with a friend who didn't look familiar and a guitar. Julio asked if it would be ok to play. I said I’d film songs as long as my phone battery would hold out, and I had an extra battery. By now, it was a crowd of half a dozen musicians and some friends, and it started to take on the feel of a miniature festival by the river. Then, after Julio cracked out some songs and called Sneaky Mandy to come out to the Mad River with her ukulele. -Jordan and Clarabelle
