Sneaky Mandy

Season 3, Mad River / Season 7, Humboldt Bay, Eurika

I know Sneaky Mandy through Julio.  Julio had made a last-minute call and told her to get to the river for Season 3.  She brought her ukulele.  This time around she had her guitar and was the fifth, and what I thought would be the last tinyboatsession that day.  it's amazing how quickly the afternoon goes with a few round trips off the dock for tiny concerts.   Because there were so many artists I didn’t spend much time rowing to explore new locations.  Since Sneaky Mandy was the last one we took some time to row up into the wind and check out the tough little fishing boats in the Marina to look for some good backgrounds.    Two names that seemed to fit the moment;  the fishing vessel’s GOOD TIMES and WEST COAST.

Mandy sang two songs.  I told her about how the project had unfolded in the last few months from New Orleans to Eureka.  She told me she’d played at a festival recently with some musicians from New Orleans.  It was ‘Handmade Moments,’ had I heard of them?  I had.  Anna Moss, from Season 5 is half that band and they had played together.  It’s a small world out here in tinyboats.  Mandy asked me if there was time for one more person.  ‘Of course,’ I said.  She made a quick phone call.

As I rowed back to the dock, she said she had another funny song she’d sung at the festival. The tune was catchy and the chorus was “I am going to leave my boyfriend for an island” which left me in stitches.  I asked her if she would sing it again so I could get it on camera.

By the time we got to the dock two more folks, Sprout and Tainá were waiting for us.  Mandy asked if there was still room for all of us in this tinyboat. Of course, there was.

SEASON 3 INTRODUCTION: "I know Sneaky Mandy because after Julio finished his songs, he gave her a call and told her she should come down to the river and play music. She brought a little ukulele. I was thrilled we had so many songs, and she came with 4 songs ready to go. I was pretty sure that one of these might put Tinyboatsession, season 3, over 100 songs. The sun was starting to fall and the light, pretty all day, started to get to the golden hour, and my phone battery was still holding when she hopped in the green canoe and began to play." -Jordan & Clarabelle
